Food Allergy
A true food allergy causes an immediate immune response in the body after the food is consumed. This is different from a non-allergic food reaction, such as occurs with lactose intolerance or food poisoning. Testing by a specialist can provide an accurate diagnosis so proper treatment for a food allergy can begin. The most common food allergens are eggs, milk, peanuts, sesame, wheat, shellfish, soy, and tree nuts, which when ingested may cause the following symptoms:
-
Skin: itchy rash, hives, swelling of the lips/tongue/throat
-
Lungs: shortness of breath, wheezing
-
Gastrointestinal: nausea, abdominal cramps, diarrhea
-
General: anaphylaxis
To provide an accurate diagnosis, Dr. Wolff will perform a thorough medical evaluation and appropriate testing with either a skin prick test or blood test.
